Blackberry Messenger (BBM), Blackberry's proprietary instant messenger now run by Indonesian Creative Media Works, has partnered with Interswitch to launch Paycode, a payment service for BBM users in Nigeria.

With the new service, BBM users will be able to make cardless cash withdrawals from ATMs as well as cardless/cashless payments at participating stores. Nigerian users can find Paycode on their Discover menu, Matthew Talbot, CEO of Creative Media Works, said in a blog post last week.

“BBM has partnered with Interswitch to help us deliver payment services to our customers in Nigeria – one of our biggest markets worldwide,” Talbot said. “Interswitch currently provides BBM users with airtime top-up and a money transfer service. We just added Paycode to the portfolio. Next up is a bill payment solution that is coming later this spring.”

Besides payment services, Talbot said BBM is working with Interswitch and other partners to introduce other services including travel services, lottery sales, shopping, food delivery, sports betting, hotel booking and ticket purchasing for movies and other events.

“These improvements are all part of our plan to establish BBM as a leading messaging platform for mobile payments, and further, to make BBM not only your favourite app, but also the gateway to your digital world,” Talbot said.

Created in 2005, BBM is one of the largest mobile messaging platforms in the world with over 100 million active users. BBM has over 22 million users in Africa, with Nigeria and South Africa as its top markets.
