Dangote, MTN retain prominence on ranking of most admired African brands

Dangote was featured among the most admired brands of African origin for the third consecutive year.

Dangote Group, a leading Pan-African conglomerate, along with MTN, the telecommunication giant, have retained their prominence in the 2020 Brand Africa 100: Africa’s Best Brands survey and rankings. The survey of the 100 premium brands in Africa is an initiative of Brand Africa, an independent and non-profit initiative.

The 2020 Brand Africa 100™, announced on Monday during a global virtual event that incorporated the market openings of the Nigerian, South African and Kenyan stock exchanges, marked the 10th anniversary of the rankings. According to a statement by Brand Africa, the rankings have established themselves as the most authoritative survey and analysis of brands and businesses on the continent. The rankings are conducted by Geopoll, a leading global mobile survey platform, across 26 countries spanning all the five African economic regions.

An analysis of the data shows that only 13 African brands were featured in the latest survey out of the 100 top brands on the continent. The number of Africa-owned brands in the study reduced by seven, compared to last year’s study. Over the past 10 years of the consumer-led survey, an average of only 20 per cent of the most admired brands in Africa are made in Africa.  

“African brands have an important role in helping to build the image, competitiveness and transforming the continent’s promise into a real change,” said Founder and Chairman of Brand Africa and Brand Leadership, Thebe Ikalafeng, during an online interactive session. “It’s concerning that in the 10 years since the triumphant FIFA World Cup in South Africa, which globally highlighted the promise and capability of Africa, and despite the vibrant entrepreneurial environment, Africa is not creating more competitive brands to meet the needs of its growing consumer market.”     

Dangote was featured among the most admired brands of African origin for the third consecutive year. Other Nigerian brands on the ranking for the most admired African brands are Glo, Nasco, Star Beer, Jumia and Maltina. Overall, the top five most admired brands in Africa are Nike, Adidas, Samsung Electronics, Coca Cola and Tecno.

GT Bank took the top spot in the financial services category, while the United Kingdom's BBC retained its top position, ranking as the most admired media brand on the continent.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Group Chief Corporate Communication Officer of the Dangote Group, Anthony Chiejina, said, Dangote Cement has been producing high quality and affordable cement, reducing poverty, engaging in unprecedented philanthropy and above all, respecting the laws of the land where the company operates.

“We fervently believe that only Africans can develop Africa, and this gives us stronger sense of relevance in all the countries where we have our operations,” Chiejina said. “And the ranking is just an acknowledgement of all these by our stakeholders, We keep our brand promise and stay authentic.”
