Dangote Sinotruk to increase trucks production, create jobs

Dangote Sinotruk West Africa Limited, a joint venture between Dangote Industries Limited and Sinotruk of China, has announced that it is embarking on the second phase of its expansion drive. The expansion drive is expected to enhance value addition and local content.

According to a statement by Dangote Sinotruk released on Monday, the company has an installed capacity to assemble and produce 15-16 trucks per shift or 10,000 trucks annually and will create over 3,000 jobs across Nigeria.

“In the next one year, we have on our agenda to assemble and fabricate truck cabins, different type of trailers, tipper bodies and tankers in our plant to increase value additions up from 40 percent to 60 percent,” said Hikmat Thapa, General Manager of Dangote Sinotruk.

He added that the company hopes to also expand sales to neighbouring West African countries in addition to fulfilling local market requirement.

During a facility tour of the Ikeja plant, Lagos State’s Commissioner of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Olayinka Oladunjoye, enjoined other businessmen to emulate Dangote in the efforts to create jobs through manufacturing rather than importation of finished products.

According to the statement, the third phase of the expansion drive would be to add the facility that would be used to fabricate, paint and assemble different types of trailer bodies, load bodies with dual and triple axles, tipper bodies and tankers.

The company also plans to form a production hub in Lagos for heavy-duty and light duty trucks and commercial vehicles in West Africa.

With the total investment of $100 million, Dangote Sinotruck West Africa Limited was formed to assemble different types of trucks. Dangote Industries owns 65 percent of the venture, while Sinotruk owns 35 percent.

The objectives of the company include providing employment opportunities to Nigerians, improving the local automobile industry, adding equipment base and achieving technological advancement in Nigeria, as well as promoting the economic development of Nigeria.
