Honeywell UOP, a leading American engineering company, announced on Thursday that it won a contract to provide critical equipment, technology licensing, and design services to Dangote Oil Refinery Limited.

Under the contract agreement, UOP said it would supply proprietary specialist equipment – including catalyst regeneration and dryer regeneration control systems, high-performance column trays, and heat exchanger tubes – which will provide superior performance and economics to the refinery.

The Illinois-based company said it would also supply high-quality packaged equipment to enable faster, more reliable refinery construction compared with field-built plants.

“Nigeria has the second-largest proven oil reserves in Africa – more than 37 billion barrels – but currently imports most of its refined products because it has limited domestic refining capacity,” said Mike Millard, Vice President and General Manager of UOP’s Process Technology & Equipment business. “This new refinery will help Nigeria meet its own growing demand for fuels and petrochemicals while raising the profitability of the nation’s crude oil.”

The Dangote petro-chemical complex will be the single largest refinery in the world, capable of processing 650,000 barrels of oil per day. When completed, the refinery would make Nigeria self-sufficient in petroleum products and a net exporter to other countries in West Africa. The fertilizer plant would be able to produce 2.8 million metric tonnes per annum of urea and ammonia.

The $20 billion Lekki-based facility will produce Euro-V quality gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel meeting international aviation specifications. The facility – which is expected to be completed in 2019 – will also produce world-scale quantities of polypropylene, a primary component used in plastics and packaging.

Founded in 1904, UOP is a division of Honeywell International. The company is a leading international supplier and licensor of process technology, catalysts, adsorbents, equipment, and consulting services to the petroleum refining, petrochemical, and gas processing industries.
