Airtel Africa has become the first telecommunications operator on the continent to launch Starlink Mobile commercially, introducing satellite-to-mobile connectivity in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The service, rolled out in partnership with Starlink, enables Airtel customers with compatible smartphones to access mobile connectivity in non-terrestrial areas wherever there is a clear view of the sky.

Starlink operates the world’s largest satellite-to-mobile constellation, with 650 satellites currently in orbit. The service supports light data applications such as WhatsApp messaging and SMS without requiring specialised devices or additional hardware.

The commercial launch in DRC follows a strategic partnership announced by Airtel Africa and Starlink in December 2025 and successful service tests conducted in Kenya in March 2026. DRC is the first Airtel Africa market and the first country in Africa to progress to full commercial deployment.

Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar described the launch as a “significant milestone,” noting that the integration of Airtel’s terrestrial network with Starlink’s satellite technology will extend essential connectivity to areas beyond the reach of conventional infrastructure. Airtel DRC Managing Director Thierry Diasnoma added that the service will benefit people living, working, or travelling in remote regions where terrestrial coverage is unavailable.

The satellite-to-mobile service is expected to be particularly valuable for transport operators, humanitarian organisations, health workers, farmers, mining operations, and communities in remote areas. It will also support communications during emergencies, natural disasters, and temporary network disruptions.

Eligible Airtel DRC customers can register through the MyAirtel App for a free 30-day introductory trial. Visitors to DRC who join Airtel can also access the trial after activating an eligible service.

Airtel Africa and Starlink plan to expand capabilities as technology evolves and regulatory approvals are secured.
