The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) said on Friday that the country’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose marginally to 6.34 per cent in September from 6.26 per cent recorded in the previous month. On a month-on-month basis, inflation rose by 0.34 per cent during the month under review.
The statistics agency attributed the uptick in inflation to rising prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages whose index rose by 10.95 per cent year-on-year and 0.55 per cent month-on-month in September.
The Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels’ Index increased by 0.48 per cent year-on-year and 0.05 per cent month-on-month even as the cost of electricity remained the same during the period.
The Transport Index decreased by 0.30 per cent in September compared to August mainly on account of decreases in the pump prices of petrol and diesel, the KNBS said.
Last week, the Central Bank of Kenya lowered its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points to 10 per cent as inflation remained within the upper limit of the apex bank’s target range of 7.5 per cent.
