Burger King, U.S. global fast food hamburger chain, is set to open its first restaurant in West Africa in December, in Abidjan, the commercial capital of Ivory Coast. Burger King opened its first outlet in Africa back in May 2013 when it launched an outlet in South Africa, in a joint venture between Western Cape-based investment company, Grand Parade Investments.
Burger King is the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world, with over 13,000 outlets in 79 countries as of 2013. It was founded in 1954, and is owned by Restaurant Brands International Inc.
According to Bloomberg, Air France-KLM’s in-flight caterer, Servair, will operate the restaurant in a mall that is due to open this month in Abidjan. The shopping center is known as PlaYce and operated by CFAO SA, a France-based company that specializes in the distribution of industrial and consumer products.
Servair is the world’s third-largest in-flight caterer. The company said that operating the Abidjan outlet of Burger King is part of an “international development strategy” to expand beyond airports. Its spokesperson, Samuel Coulon, told Bloomberg the company aims to open more Burger King restaurants in West Africa in the next few years.
Ivory Coast, one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, has attracted global brands like Dutch brewer Heineken NV and Groupe Fnac SA, the French retailer. The country is also the world’s biggest cocoa producer.
