Communities and civil society across Africa protest against TotalEnergies

In South Africa, hundreds marched from Standard Bank’s headquarters to TotalEnergies’ offices in Johannesburg.
Protests by activists, civil society organisations, and frontline communities across Africa held on 18-24 August 2025, demanding that the French oil giant TotalEnergies should stop its operations in the continent, pay reparations to affected communities, and make way for a just and community-centered energy transition.
The coordinated protests, dubbed Africa Week of Action, held under the umbrella body, KickTotalOutOfAfrica. The protests witnessed events in more than 10 countries, including Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Togo, Benin, and Senegal.
“Protests, creative resistance, community townhalls, and people’s tribunals put fossil colonialism on trial and advanced a clear call: Total must pay up and get out,” the organisers said in a statement sent to Financial Nigeria.
