Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has continued to implement the Nigerian Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion, and Rehabilitation Programme (NEGMERP) of its present Management, nationwide. A lot of progress has been made in the implementation of the programme in the Benin region of the power transmission company.
The Benin region of TCN, referred to as the “hub” of the national grid, hosts 10 330kV active transmission lines inter-connecting many power stations in the country. The region recently took delivery of new 300MVA 300/132/33kV and 100MVA 132/33kV power transformers with eight truckloads of transformer accessories at its Benin 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation. The 300MVA transformers project is a part of TCN's rehabilitation projects funded by the World Bank.
Further to this, the Effurun Substation in Delta State, under the Benin region, received a new 100MVA 132/33kV power transformer with transformer accessories. Prior to this, there was installation and energisation of a new 150MVA 330/132/33kV Interbus Transformer (IBTR) at Delta IV Transmission Substation, Ughelli, Delta State. This has restored flexibility to the substation by enabling TCN evacuate power from Transcorp Power Limited at both 330kV and 132kV voltage levels.
The Benin region of TCN spans Edo, Delta, and parts of Ekiti and Ondo states. Its rehabilitation and expansion projects are progressing steadily, with the aim of supporting the growing economic and social development of the region, TCN says. Some of the ongoing projects at various stages of completion include upgrading of 2x30MVA transformers with 80MVA transformer at Ondo Work Centre, installation of 60MVA transformer at Ughelli Substation, and installation of 2x80MVA transformers.
The region, under its 330kV level, has 4x150MVA with 600MVA capacity to radiate 480 megawatts; while at its 132kV level has 19 transformers with 760MVA and generates 608 megawatts for offtake to Benin distribution company’s (Disco) load centres.
