NSE All-Share Index falls by 0.51 per cent

The All Share Index of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), the benchmark stock index of the NSE, depreciated by 0.51 per cent to close the week at 35,266.29 points at the end of the trading week on Friday.

According to the NSE's weekly report for August 17, market capitalisation also depreciated by 0.51 per cent to close at N12.875 trillion, as bearish sentiments continued.

A total turnover of 1.147 billion shares worth N12.546 billion were traded in 16,649 deals, compared to the 925.630 million shares valued at N8.333 billion that were exchanged last week.

Same as in the previous week, the financial services industry led the activity chart (measured by volume), contributing 77.78 per cent and 65.77 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively. That is, 891.785 million shares valued at N8.251 billion traded in 9,187 deals.

This was followed by the consumer goods industry with 79.149 million shares valued at N2.631 billion, trading in 2,931 deals. The conglomerates industry was next with a turnover of 60.294 shares worth N93.993 million trading in 694 deals.

United Bank for Africa Plc, remained one of the top three more traded equities. The other two were Nem Insurance and Mansard Insurance. Trading in the top three equities accounted for 360.623 million shares worth N1.967 billion in 970 deals, contributing 31.45 per cent and 15.68 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively.

The top five price gainers this week were International Breweries; Portland Paints and Products Nigeria; Sovereign Trust Insurance; AxaMansard Insurance; and Unilever Nigeria. While the top price losers included Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals; Secure Electronic Technology Plc; Skye Bank; Berger Paints; and Continental Reinsurance.

A total of 16 equities appreciated in price during the week, lower than the 20 recorded last week. 56 equities depreciated in price, higher than the 47 equities in the previous week, while 97 equities remained unchanged lower than the 103 recorded in the preceding week.

According to the weekly report, a total of 2,647 units of Federal Government bond valued at N2.725 million were traded this week in 17 deals, compared with the 7,787 units valued at N8.005 million, traded in 11 deals the previous week.
