MTN launches new bundle with solar charger in South Africa

MTN has launched a new package deal that includes SunStream, a solar charging kit, and 20 rand worth of free airtime. SunStream is a micro-solar panel that converts sunlight into electricity which is used to charge mobile devices.
The patent is owned by World Panel, a U.S.-based company founded by solar entrepreneur, John Anderson. According to a statement released on Monday by World Panel, the new bundle was announced at an event in Mthatha, a town in the East Cape province of South Africa. The package, which comes with a 219 rand price tag, is expected to be subsequently rolled out across South Africa.
“The reliable, affordable power offered by the SunStream™ can be a game-changer, and we are therefore pleased to launch this bundle with MTN,” said Hennie Botha, World Panel’s Managing Director for South Africa.
SunStream was introduced late last year in South Africa as an alternative source of charging mobile devices for a region with erratic power supply, but that has abundant supply of sunlight. World Panel said the device streams electricity to phones even while submerged in water.
