Marriott said the latest deals will add over 1,100 rooms to its existing Africa offering and will include the debut of its AC Hotels brand on the continent.

Marriott International, the world’s largest hotel chain, has announced that it has signed agreements to develop six new hotels in South Africa, Kenya, Egypt and Mauritius.

The announcement comes after Marriott completed its acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide in a deal worth about $13 billion last month, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

“The past couple of weeks have seen an incredible transformation for our company, and I am proud to say that we are continuing the momentum with our expansion and development plans across the African continent,” said Alex Kyriakidis, President and Managing Director, Middle East and Africa, Marriott International.

He added: “We officially opened the Kigali Marriott Hotel yesterday, under the patronage of His Excellency, The Honourable Prime Minister Murekezi, and today we announce six new deals across Africa, which when open, are expected to bring our total African property and room count to 205 and 37,000 respectively.”

Marriott said the latest deals will add over 1,100 rooms to its existing Africa offering and will include the debut of its AC Hotels brand on the continent. In South Africa, Marriott said it has signed agreements with its long-term partner, Amdec Group, to develop 189-room AC Hotel Cape Town Waterfront, 200-room Cape Town Marriott Hotel Foreshore, and the 150-room Residence Inn by Marriott Cape Town Foreshore.

In Mauritius, Marriott said it has signed a deal with Clear Ocean Hotel Resorts Limited to develop the Sheraton Mauritius St Felix Resort and The Residences at Sheraton Mauritius St Felix Resort, which will feature 152 guestrooms and suites and 37 branded apartments and villas. The resorts are scheduled to open in 2020.

Marriott said it will develop the Element Cairo in Egypt with Abraj Misr Urban Development and owned by Middle East Real Estate for Development. The hotel will have 344 rooms and is scheduled to open in 2019.

In Kenya, Marriott said it has signed a franchise agreement with Kamcan Properties Limited to develop Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi, which will have 96 rooms. The hotel is expected to be open in 2017.

“These news deals are testament to our combined development efforts going forward, as there are significant growth synergies between the brands and our newly combined company, with a focus on expending brands across the region, and looking for opportunities in new markets,” concluded Mr. Kyriakidis.
