US drilling rig count expands by 3 percent in June

On year-to-date basis, Platts said the U.S. rig count has risen by 124 percent from June 2016.
Platts RigData, a forecasting and analytics unit of S&P Global Platts, announced on Monday that the U.S. rig count for June 2017 rose by 3 percent to 1,055 compared with 1,026 in May 2017.
On year-to-date basis, Platts said the U.S. rig count has risen by 124 percent from June 2016. This rig count includes U.S. onshore, U.S. inland waters, and U.S. offshore Gulf of Mexico drilling rigs.
A Rig Count is an official listing of all the oil and gas rigs that are operational at a certain location. This count demonstrates the necessary details such as the location of each rig and its functional status. It is an important procedure as it helps to get an insight of the active number of drilling rigs that are installed on both offshore and onshore sites, according to Petropedia.com.
Among major oil producing states, North Dakota gained the highest number of rigs with eights rigs added in June. New Mexico and Colorado gained four rigs each, while Texas and Louisiana gained three rigs each.
Oklahoma gained only one rig, while the rest of the US mainland gained 10 rigs, bringing total US land rigs gained in June to 33.The US Inland Waters lost three rigs, while the US Gulf of Mexico lost one rig.
The US rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. It bottomed out in May of 2016 at 404, according to the Denver Post.
According to data from the US Energy Information Administration, US weekly oil output rose to 9.338 million as of June 30th, 2017 compared with 8.944 million bpd as of January 13th, 2017.
