Standard Chartered expands digital retail banking across Africa
News Highlight
Standard Chartered said the digital-only retail banking is part of its digital transformation strategy for Africa.
Following a successful roll-out of its digital-only retail banking in Côte d’Ivoire and Uganda, Standard Chartered Bank has launched the digital banking platform in Tanzania and Ghana. The platform allows users to bank on-the-go, anytime and anywhere.
The service provides a number of benefits such as instant account opening, zero-fee on bill payment, zero-monthly ledger, free-initial ATM cards and no minimum balance requirement.
Earlier this month, Standard Chartered announced that it would be launching its digital solution in four African countries in the first quarter of 2019, starting with Uganda in January, Tanzania and Ghana in February, and Kenya to follow. The digital bank rolled out in Côte d’Ivoire last year.
According to a statement released by Standard Chartered on Monday, the digital-only retail banking is part of its digital transformation strategy for Africa. The expansion is aimed at increasing digital adoptions among its customers, especially the digital natives.
“Digitising Africa continues to be an integral component of our strategic transformation, and we have been steadily expanding our footprint across the continent,” said Sunil Kaushal, CEO of Standard Chartered – Africa and the Middle East. “We are constantly looking for ways to push the boundaries, by providing our customers innovative solutions and technologies. Ultimately, it is about listening to what our clients want and meeting their banking needs by offering a digital platform to do their banking anytime and anywhere, through the channel they prefer.”
The roll-out of the digital-only retail banking platform, according to the statement, will also offer customers exclusive retail, travel and dining experiences through the local alliances of Standard Chartered Bank. Customers can access these digital services by downloading the Standard Chartered mobile application via the Google Play store or Apple store.
As part of its activation launch in Tanzania and Ghana, Standard Chartered is also running a marketing campaign to remind consumers that banking should not stop them from doing what they love to do, and when they want to do it. The campaign is tagged, “BEUNSTOPPABLE”.
