Equatorial Guinea hosts important EITI meeting to discuss compliance

Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is holding an important meeting to discuss ongoing developments in the African extractive industry and the level of compliance of African countries to EITI standards. The meeting is being held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. The country is currently applying to join EITI.
The two-day meeting, which began today, was opened by His Excellency Fidel Marcos Meñe Nkogo, Delegate Minister of Mines, Industry and Energy. He was representing Prime Minister of Equatorial Guinea, H.E. Mr. Vicente Ehate Tomi. It is the second meeting of National Coordinators of EITI. The first meeting was held in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, in June.
EITI member-countries who are participating at the meeting are, Congo, Senegal, Guinea Conakry, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Niger, Togo, Central African Republic, Sierra Leone. Equatorial Guinea and Gabon are attending as observers. African members of the EITI Board are also attending the meeting, which will enable African countries to find a common position before the next EITI Global Conference, to be held in Lima, Peru in February 2016.
Cesar Augusto Hinestrosa Gomez, EITI Director General, said: “That all countries have selected Equatorial Guinea to host this important meeting reinforces our commitment to become a member of EITI.”
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative is an international organization that manages financial transparency and improved governance in extractive industries such as mining and oil and gas.
