NSE’s All Share Index falls for second consecutive week

- Market capitalization declined by 0.65 per cent to N9.358 trillion last week.


It was the second consecutive week of declines as the All Share Index – the main index of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) – fell by 0.65 per cent during the trading week ended on Friday, August 12. The index fell to 27,425.86 points last week, from 27,425.86 points recorded in the previous week.

Market capitalization also declined by 0.65 per cent during the week, falling to N9.358 trillion from N9.419 trillion recorded in the penultimate week. The NSE’s benchmark index has declined by 4.87 per cent on a year-to-date basis.

On the gainer’s chart, the most appreciated stocks last week were: NPF Microfinance Bank, which rose 12.22 per cent to close at N1.01; International Breweries, which appreciated 5.26 per cent to close at N20; Guaranty Trust Bank rose 4.93 per cent to N24.25; UACN Property Development’s stock rose 4.84 per cent to N3.9; and A.G. Leventis closed at 97 kobo, having appreciated by 4.3 per cent.

On the loser’s chart, the most depreciated stocks were: CAP, which fell 22.43 per cent to close at N28.7; Sterling Bank’s stock declined 18.75 per cent to close at N1.04; Diamond Bank fell 13.87 per cent to N1.18; Honeywell Flour Mill declined 10.69 per cent to close at N1.42; and MRS Oil Nigeria lost 9.74 per cent of its value to close at N38.57.

The Financial Services Industry led the activity chart with 1.237 billion shares valued at N7.913 billion and trading in 9,544 deals. The sector accounted for 90.87 per cent and 73.88 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively.

The Conglomerates Industry followed with 46.182 million shares which were traded in 637 deals at a total value of N77.192 million. In third place was the Consumer Goods Industry with a turnover of 38.102 million shares worth N1.372 billion and trading in 2,907 deals.

The top three most traded equities – Wapic Insurance, FBN Holdings, and Guaranty Trust Bank – accounted for 666.721 million shares valued at N5.064 billion and trading in 3,205 deals. The equities contributed 48.99 per cent and 47.27 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively.
