NSE’s All Share Index falls by 0.95 per cent

The main index of the Nigerian Stock Exchange – the All Share Index – fell by 0.95 per cent during the trading week ended on Friday, October 21. According to the NSE’s weekly stock market report, the index fell to 27,596.82 points last week from 27,861.03 points recorded a week earlier.

Market capitalization also declined by 0.95 per cent to N9.479 trillion. On a year-to-date basis, the index has lost 3.65 per cent of its value.

On the gainer’s chart, the most appreciated stocks last week were: Caverton Group, which rose 13.16 per cent to close at 86 kobo; NEM Insurance, which appreciated by 5 per cent to close at 84 kobo; Neimeth Pharmaceuticals’ stock rose 4.88 per cent to 86 kobo; Wema Bank rose 4.84 per cent to close at 65 kobo; and Beta Glass Company, appreciated by 3.33 per cent to N31.

On the loser’s chart, the most depreciated stocks were: Cadbury Nigeria, which fell 16.21 per cent to close at N13.13; Glaxo Smithkline Nigeria, which fell 14.19 per cent to close at N15.78; A.G. Leventis, which fell 12.9 per cent to close at 81 kobo; Forte Oil, which fell 12.28 per cent to close at N127.3; and National Aviation Handling Company, which fell 11.52 per cent to close at N2.92.

The Financial Services Industry led the activity chart with 495.992 million shares valued at N2.767 billion and traded in 6,522 deals. The sector contributed 73.51 per cent and 36.14 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively. The Conglomerates Industry followed with 80.885 million shares which were traded in 536 deals and valued at N95.212 million. In third place was by the Construction/Real Estate Industry with a turnover of 32.484 million shares worth N18.498 million and traded in 70 deals.

The top three most traded equities – Law Union & Rock Insurance, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated and Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc – accounted for 263.199 million shares valued at N1.033 billion and traded in 637 deals. The equities contributed 39.01 per cent and 13.49 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively.
