Facebook has moved its Johannesburg offices into larger premises as the company continues to provide support to advertisers, application developers and other key partners across the African continent, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

“We have enjoyed working closely with entrepreneurs, partners, developers and small businesses as they have used Facebook as a platform for growth,” said Nunu Ntshingila, Regional Director, Africa at Facebook. “It’s inspiring for us to learn from the continent and to play a role in helping people and organizations connect with the world.”

Facebook said its users in Africa have grown by 42 percent to over 170 million monthly active users since the company established a direct presence on the continent in 2015. The Menlo Park-based company said about 94 percent of its African users access its network via mobile devices.

Senior Facebook executives – Carolyn Everson, Vice President, Global Marketing Solutions and Nicola Mendelsohn, Vice President, Europe, Middle East, and Africa – attended the launch of the new office in Johannesburg.

“Facebook is deeply committed to Africa, a mobile-first continent where seven in 10 of all connected people use the platform,” said Everson. “Many people in Africa are coming online for the first time, unleashing new possibilities for people and businesses alike. Our new offices are part of our ongoing commitment to invest in the African market and work with innovators across our key target countries.”

Founded in 2004, Facebook is one of the largest social media companies in the world with over 1.86 billion monthly active users. The company also owns other popular social networking apps such as Facebook Messenger, What’s App and Instagram.
