The awards were announced at the 2018 World Travel Awards (WTA) Africa and Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony, which took place at the Durban International Convention Centre in South Africa on Saturday.

The ceremony is part of the sixth leg of the WTA Grand Tour – a series of regional events to acknowledge outstanding travel brands. The grand finale of the WTA will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, on December 1. All the regional winners will compete at the grand finale in Lisbon.

The WTA, founded in 1993, acknowledges, rewards and celebrates excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries. Over the years, it has become the ultimate hallmark of excellence in these industries.

Hilton Hotels and Resorts, the parent company of Transcorp Hilton, was also voted as Africa’s Leading Hotel Brand.

The hotel company currently has 41 operating hotels in Africa. Last year, it launched the Hilton Africa Growth Initiative to support the conversion of existing hotels to Hilton brands with an investment of $50 million over the next five years. During the five years, the company expects to secure 100 conversion opportunities and add about 20,000 rooms to its portfolio to meet the growing demand for quality branded hotels across Africa.

In Nigeria, the Wheatbaker was named the Leading Boutique Hotel; AVIS emerged as the Leading Car Rental Company; Amara Suites was named the Leading Serviced Apartments; Satguru Travel, the Leading Travel Agency; and HRG Nigeria emerged as the Leading Travel Management Company.

Transcorp Hilton also won Nigeria’s Leading MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) Hotel 2018 award.

Recently, Hilton Hotels and Resorts opened its second hotel in Nigeria – the Legend Hotel Lagos Airport, which is part of its 60 Curio Collection hotels around the world. The hotel company had said there are additional seven hotels in its development pipeline in Nigeria.

According to a statement by the WTA, South Africa was voted Africa’s Leading Destination with Durban named as Africa’s Leading City Destination and Cape Town winning Africa’s Leading Festival and Event Destination award.

In the Indian Ocean categories, Mauritius sustained its reputation as the definitive romantic island by winning the Indian Ocean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination award.

In the aviation sector, Ethiopian Airlines was voted Africa’s Leading Airline, while Kenya Airlines won the Africa’s Leading Airline – Business and Economy Class.

Africa’s Leading Airport went to Cape Town International Airport.

“We have had the privilege of recognizing the leading hotels, airlines and hospitality providers from across Africa and the Indian Ocean and my congratulations to each of them,” said Graham Cooke, Founder of WTA. “The Durban ICC has reinforced its standing as a world-class entertainment venue on what has been a magnificent evening of travel industry triumph, as well as a highlight of our 25th anniversary.”
