Organizers cancel Africa energy summit citing denial of U.S. visas

News Highlight

Failure to obtain visas for African invitees caused the cancellation of another U.S.-Africa summit in California in March.

The organizers of the U.S.-Africa Energy Summit have cancelled the event that was to take place in Madison, Wisconsin, USA, on September 18-19, 2017, citing problems securing U.S. visas for participants.

Citing a report by Business Daily Africa on Sept. 7, Stratfor – a U.S.-based global geopolitical analyst firm and partner publisher to Financial Nigeria – said it is unclear whether the U.S. State Department has reduced the number of visas it grants Africans since U.S. President Donald Trump's inauguration in January.

Failure to obtain visas for African invitees caused the cancellation of another U.S.-Africa summit in California in March.

Three African countries – Sudan, Libya and Somalia – were on the list of six Muslim-majority countries affected by the second travel ban by President Trump, which went into effect in June. The other three countries were Iran, Syria and Yemen.
