NSE’s All Share Index appreciates by 1.64 per cent

The main index of the Nigerian Stock Exchange – the All Share Index – appreciated by 1.64 per cent during the trading week ended on Friday, March 17, according to the NSE’s weekly report.

The index ended the week at 25,653.16 points, up from 25,238.01 points posted a week earlier. On a year-to-date basis, however, the index has lost 4.55 per cent of its value. Market capitalization also appreciated by 1.64 per cent to close at N8.878 trillion compared to N8.734 trillion recorded in the previous week.

On the gainer’s chart, the most appreciated stocks last week were: Diamond Bank, which rose 16.05 per cent to close at 94 kobo; United Capital, which appreciated by 15.70 per cent to N2.80; Continental Reinsurance rose 13.21 per cent to N1.20; Africa Prudential Registrars rose 9.65 per cent to N2.50; and United Bank for Africa appreciated by 9.56 per cent to close at N5.50.

On the loser’s chart, the most depreciated stocks were: N.E.M Insurance, which fell 10.99 per cent to close at 81 kobo; 7-UP Bottling Company depreciated by 9.64 per cent to close at N77.71; Nigerian Aviation Handling Company fell 9.09 per cent to N2; Neimeth Pharmaceuticals declined by 8.96 per cent to close at 61 kobo; and Ashaka Cement fell 8.30 per cent to N9.50.

The Financial Services Industry led the activity chart with 853.414 million shares valued at N4.269 billion and traded in 7,904 deals. The sector contributed 82.91 per cent and 53.50 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively.

The Oil and Gas Industry followed with 80.250 million shares, which traded in 1,443 deals and worth N1.151 billion. The third place was occupied by Conglomerates Industry with a turnover of 45.770 million shares valued at N83.469 million, and traded in 596 deals.

The top three most traded equities – Diamond Bank, FBN Holdings, and Fidelity Bank – accounted for 397.225 million shares worth N546.501 million, and traded in 1,680 deals. The equities contributed 38.59 per cent and 6.85 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively.
