The Financial Times (FT) / International Finance Corporation (IFC) Annual Sustainable Banking Award is promoting the triple-bottomline business principle. Sustainable banking is associated with voluntary accession to the Equator Principles which about ten of the world's biggest banks developed and voluntarily signed up to in 2003, to promote the integration of environmental and social responsibilities into banks' core business strategies.
 
In five years, 61 banks have signed up to the Equator Principles, and four of Nigeria's biggest banks contested the third edition of the FT/IFC Sustainable Banking Award in
June 2008. From the business models of winners at the award, sustainable banking presents new frontier opportunities, while it helps in mitigating environmental and social risks to banking functions.
