A phone-in programme on Ray Power featured an energy expert as guest this morning on the issue of how to solve the power crisis in Nigeria. His views were 'out of the box', but be as they may, corruption remains the biggest challenge as Nigerian elites continue to pander to primitive acquisition instincts and jeopardise national investment. However, the expert affirmed that Nigeria's choice of gas for the power plant is spot on as Nigeria's proven gas reserve is one of the world's largest. And gas-based power stations have quick up time relative to nuclear technology which always raises international concern and could be fatal in an accident situation. But the fraud in the energy sector also involves inept and morally depraved practice of sending bills to consumers for power not available. Consumers also need some re-orientation. In all, it seems like it is not just about the new pledged investment by Yar'Adua that will solve the issue, although it is needed. A light at the end of the tunnel will come when known abuses in the system are punished, govt embraces global practice in project management and Nigerians across the board are ready to turn their country around for good.

My sister just told me that NEPA is born again in Abuja - (light has improved in the estate they live in). Port Harcourt is worse off with all the failed gas plant etc. Companies like michellin, corelab etc listed power problem as one of the reasons for closing down......Do you think if NEPA improves in Nigeria, things will be alot better???

Nigerian govt. is a sorry administration since there is never one that comes with any good intention about the power problem in the country. if otherwise why should the govt. embark on importation of generating plant to power their offices if they had any good thing for poor masses on electricity. They should also rely on public power supply than acquiring generating sets and stop budgeting a huge money for running it.

Power,Nigerias biggest problem. Despite the fact that we dont have electricity as expected, the PHCN went ahead to increase electricity bills. We are paying for service we know we are not going to get.And the worse part is we are not guaranteed 24hrs of electricity even with 6000mw says minister.what a shame.
