I believe the on-going probes are tarnishing Nigeria's image abroad than building a positive perception of the fight against corruption in the country. I was confronted with this reality on BBC Focus on Africa in London in March. The probing of the African Finance Corporation (AFC) is certainly very unpopular, going by reports in the national press. We risk maligning the heroes amongst us. However, if the probes were through a judicial process, the outcomes would be worth anticipating and would be less scandalous of the country. In a sense the legislative probes amount to lack of will to fight corruption by the government, choosing instead to take the country on a circus. The Legislators need to bring the probes to an orderly close and let the EFCC/ICPC and the courts do their jobs. What the Legislators are doing is not a necessary preface to a judicial enquiry and prosecution of suspected corrupt past officials. A big question is would the present probes deter any government official from corrupt act?

Certainly, the fight against corruption in Nigeria is boosted by on-going probes by the Legislature. This is a new era in Nigeria, since nothing else had curbed the excesses in crime rates and corruption, the probes by the legislature will go a long way to fight corruption.

I keep wondering why Nigerians will rather prefer to have a good image in place of a healthy economy, theres no way a good clothe can take the place of a properly functioning body system. As for me its a big kudos to the probing sections we've had in recent times, and as a matter of fact it should not stop.Sanity needs to be restored to our public offices and until people need to be begged before they come out to contest for a political post, nothing has been done.Allow bbc and the likes to go on with their image-tarnishing news, its we who knows the good the probe(s ) is doing us.

What has been shared by the other commentators is absolutely mind-boggling. It is becoming clear that we might eventualy come to a common understanding of what really is problem of us "Africans". There seems to be a serious problem with being an "African" everywhere you go. I would not know whether is an Identity-crisis or what, but it worries me, Share your own thoughts.

The probes in themselves are worthless unless they eventually lead to those responsible being brought to book. Unless we get the judicial convictions and sentences on these economic saboteurs, the probes would be nothing short of jamborees that waste public funds and valuable legislative time that could have been put to better use. One crucial question is how do we prevent recurrence of such a shameful and colossal natioanal disgrace? and a corollary is: aren't there more efficient ways of detecting and dealing with similar situations in a more real-time manner? Here is the point we need greater openness in government and governance, we cannot afford the time being wasted in passage of the freedom of information bill and we need to strengthen our law enforcement agencies to do their job effectively in real time-waiting for the national assembly of a subsequent administration to deal with curruption is NOT acceptable. The only sensitive and specific benchmark to guage the effectiveness of the fight against curruption is the number of judicial convictions, IT IS NOT the number of jamboree probes, or poorly investigated and prosecuted cases that eventually get thrown out of the courts, and certainly not in the number of sensational headlines generated in the media by either of the above.
